Traders Fuming 😡 New TopStep Rules

Topstep has quietly rolled out one of its most significant updates yet for funded traders: trailing drawdown and Daily Loss Limit (DLL) rules are now enforced on live funded accounts — not just during the evaluation phase. What Changed?
Trailing Drawdown: Your maximum drawdown now trails your highest account balance. If your account peaks at $110,000, the drawdown limit becomes $10,000 below that peak ($100,000). It moves up with profits but never down — meaning a big winning streak can raise your safety net, but any pullback risks a breach.
Daily Loss Limit (DLL): Live accounts now have a hard daily stop — typically $2,000–$3,000 depending on account size (exact figures vary by contract and account tier). Hit the DLL and your account is paused for the day; repeated breaches can lead to deactivation.
Effective Date: These rules began applying to new and existing live funded accounts in early 2026 (exact rollout dates vary by account creation date — check your dashboard).
Why Topstep Did ThisThe firm cites capital protection and sustainability. Trailing drawdown prevents traders from giving back huge gains in one bad day, while DLL stops catastrophic single-session losses. Topstep’s message is clear: they want consistent, disciplined traders — not gamblers riding volatility waves.Impact on Traders
Positive: Forces better risk management → potentially longer careers and more sustainable payouts.
Negative: Reduces flexibility. High-volatility days (news events, FOMC) become riskier. Traders who used to “swing big” to recover drawdown now face stricter limits.
Who’s hit hardest: Aggressive scalpers/day traders on metals, energies, or indices with big ranges. Many are shifting to lower-vol contracts (e.g., micros) or non-prop strategies.
What to Do Now
Log into your Topstep dashboard and review your current trailing drawdown level and DLL.
Adjust position sizing — especially on high-vol assets.
Test new risk rules in sim or small size before going live again.
If these changes don’t fit your style, explore other prop firms (some still offer static drawdown).
